About MAP Reading Fluency with Coach

How MAP Reading Fluency with Coach works

  1. Once a student takes the MAP Reading Fluency assessment, their results are made available in the MAP Reading Fluency reports and dashboard.

  2. Coach then takes the assessment results and places the student in tutoring sessions based on their specific areas of need. The tutoring sessions are led and guided by Maya, Coach’s friendly and engaging AI teacher assistant.

  3. The student practices by reading aloud to Maya.

  4. Maya actively listens and detects oral reading errors to deliver just-in-time micro-interventions that assist each student through the practices. These practice sessions continue throughout the term, in between assessment testing. Coach’s reporting dashboard provides insights to educators on their student’s tutoring progress.

Supported grades and languages

Coach supports students in grades K–5 in Spanish and English.

Frequency of use

Coach is intended to be administered continuously between assessments and alongside whole class instruction from teachers. The benefit of Coach is it provides students multiple opportunities to practice reading and develop their reading skills throughout the school year. NWEA recommends that students practice reading with Maya an average of 30 minutes a week over the course of 2-4 sessions.

Note: As students complete stories, Coach will level the following stories presented to match performance. Students must read the entire story for the system to save and leveling to occur. Due to this, you may want to consider aiming for a set number of stories (rather than amount of time) each time a student logs in.
