The following table describes the types of tests offered by the MAP system.

NOTE: The number of questions listed is an approximation. The actual number varies for each student as the system adapts to the student’s responses. Also, the count can change when NWEA updates test packages.

Short screening tests to measure foundational skills of number and letter understanding. Use these tests for students who are at the earliest stages of learning in reading and mathematics, particularly kindergarten.

Skills Checklist

MPG reading and mathematics

11 to 53 questions/about 8 to 60 min., based on skill tested

Percent correct, shown in MPG reports

Skills tests that inform instruction for the specific skills chosen for testing. Use these tests to assess student achievement in particular skills before or after instruction in those skills.

MAP/MPG Survey with Goals

MPG reading and mathematics

57 questions/about 50 min. (split into 2 sessions)

RIT score, shown in MAP reports

Adaptive tests that provide overall scores, as well as scores for each goal area. Use these tests to identify appropriate skill areas for instruction, measure growth, and assess the effectiveness of specific instructional strategies.

MAP Survey

MAP reading, language, and mathematics

Short versions of the survey with goals tests that provide overall scores only. Use these tests to quickly place incoming students.

End of Course

MAP geometry, algebra I and II, and integrated mathematics I and II

49 to 52 questions/ about 55 min.

A single-level test that evaluates an entire course of study in one main area. Use these tests at the end of a course only (only once per student).

*Length includes familiarization questions. Time is the average time to take the test. Length and time vary by student. For total test administration time, add 10 to 15 minutes for setup and pre-test instructions.
