Placement in Coach
How students are placed in Coach
MAP Reading Fluency data is used to inform placement in Coach’s 1:1 personalized reading pathway. After students complete the MAP Reading Fluency assessment for Beginning of Year (BoY), Middle of Year (MoY), or End of Year (EoY), their results are used for placement in Coach.
Assessment | Placement Details |
---|---|
Foundational Skills | All students who were assigned or routed to MAP Reading Fluency’s Foundational Skills emergent reader track will be placed into Coach’s Early Reader Skills Scaffold (ERSS). |
English Oral Reading | Students taking English MAP Reading Fluency and assigned or routed to oral reading passages will be placed into Coach using an adaptive method based on their English MAP Reading Fluency Scaled Words Correct per Minute (SWCPM) score. |
Spanish Oral Reading | Students taking Spanish MAP Reading Fluency and assigned or routed to oral reading passages will be placed into Coach using an adaptive method based on their Spanish Scaled Words Correct per Minute (SWCPM) performance level (below, approaching, meets, exceeds). |
Students who haven’t tested | Students who have not taken the MAP Reading Fluency assessment can use Coach K–6 English and Spanish without assessment-based placement. Students are automatically assigned based on the mean score of the grade/term and the corresponding practice contents. |

Progress monitoring
Coach doesn’t include progress monitoring. You should continue to use MAP Reading Fluency for accurate and reliable progress monitoring tools to evaluate student growth.
Early readers
If a student is identified as an early reader, their reading tutoring with Maya focuses on building 40 distinct skills via the Early Reader Skills Scaffold. These activities are heavily scaffolded and research-based to provide significant support in improving the students’ early literacy learning and development.
Each activity builds on the previous activities, affording the student opportunities to practice and develop key skills for reading mastery. Each activity is relatively short, featuring 4-7 items.
