Administering MAP Growth in a Blended Learning Environment

Key Considerations

MAP Growth assessments can be administered successfully with any blended program model a school implements during the 2020–21 school year.

  • Students in a full-time remote learning setting may take MAP Growth assessments online from their home. See Pre-administration to prepare for remote testing.
  • Assessments may be administered in person on alternating days or weeks when students are present in the school building. If possible, K–5 students are encouraged to take the assessment on a day they are scheduled to be in the classroom. Older students may be more adept at remote testing compared to the hands-on proctoring required with younger students.
  • If a school opts to administer MAP Growth on a day or week that a student is remote, it is recommended to create a schedule when students can borrow DOE-issued devices they will use to take the assessment remotely. This allows teachers and staff to check whether the hardware and software is up-to-date.
  • Students with special needs (regardless of age) may need additional support and guidance while taking the assessment. The recommendation is to schedule the assessment on days that the student will be in the classroom. If this is not possible, the recommendation is to review accommodations, speak with families to see if they can support a remote administration, and prepare with a practice test.
  • For students in grades K–2, it is recommended to suspend testing midway (after about 20 minutes) in order to provide a break period, regardless of where they are taking the assessment.
  • For secondary grades, for each subject, you may use the regular class period (either online or in-person) to conduct testing relevant to that subject. However, for shorter class periods (45 minutes or less), you may need to switch to an alternating schedule with longer class periods to allow for adequate testing time (up to 60–75 minutes).
  • As a reminder for remote administration, proctors are recommended to create small test sessions with fewer students than a whole class in order to better manage both the test session and the communication platform.

Refer to the following examples when you schedule testing at your school. In addition, allow time in your schedule for proctors to prepare student testing devices, practice sessions, and test sessions.

Sample 1: Scheduling In-Person Testing for One Grade

This example models using both in-person and remote time to schedule testing. Make-up tests may be scheduled to be completed remotely or in-person, depending on a student's schedule during testing week.

Depending on the computer lab’s maximum capacity, multiple classes may be scheduled to test simultaneously with social distancing; 75-minute test sessions can be scheduled throughout the day for multiple classes taking the assessment.

Students who completed their test within one sitting may complete their independent work.

Extra make-up testing. If possible, make-up tests may be scheduled to be completed remotely.

In preparation for remote testing next day, complete the following tasks:

• Demonstrate to students how they will communicate with their proctor during remote testing (e.g., using the chat feature in Zoom to ask questions).

• Answer remaining questions about MAP Growth or remote testing.

• Provide students with testing schedule for the week.
